10                   History of the Kingdom

Gulf, they are so abundant & fertile, that it would be impossible to exhaust them of wheat, wine & all kinds of fruit, & what's more a very large quantity of precious stones are drawn from the mountains which are around this lake, the best & finest that one can recover in all the Indies, from which a large & rich traffic that prevails, so that by such riches the public affairs can be supported without burdening the people.
      Pearls are fished at the entrance to the gulf in great quantity, some of which are white & clear like those we see in our Europe, others incarnate and brilliant like rubies & carbuncles, but they are most expensive, especially as they are rare & prized by all the great. The Ambassador of Antangil showed me a couple, which he wanted to present on behalf of his master to the King of Bandan, which were in the shape of a pear, the size of an acorn, which he estimated at no less than ten thousand escus, & told me that the King had a thousand ones more beautiful, because they do not dare sell them without first presenting them to him.
      As for the other Provinces which are in the tropics, they harvest wheat, corn, hard & excellent wines. In the hilly and high places,
