the enemy is strong in cavalry, we make a wing & rampart of the baggage: If with infantry, we leave it behind, & we spread the cavalry far apart on the flanks to embrace the enemy in the shape of a crescent. If he marches side by side, the whole army is placed between the baggage & him. If there is doubt as to from which side he may come, the said baggage is placed in the middle, the infantry in front & behind, & the gendarmerie on the flanks, & the light horses at the head, & in many other ways, as the general pleases to dispose of them according to the occasion . Of the order that one keeps when one wants to fight. CHAP. XIII. As for the order, here is how one arranges the army going to combat. Firstly, if the army is of twelve thousand footmen & three thousand horses: one sets out the footmen in three, the light horse in two, & the gendarmerie in four.
