Their artillery is placed at both ends, in the spaces between the infantry and the cavalry, and sometimes between the foot soldiers, according to the place and the necessity. All the pikemen are in the middle of the battalions, and the arquebusiers and musketeers on the flanks, or sometimes mixed between the ranks of the pikemen, and some other times in the center of the battalion. When they come to combat, the musketeers make a salvo from rank to rank, turning in a circle, until the first rank in turning returns to its place from where it started: then putting the shield in one hand, and the sword in the other: advances together with the pikemen towards the enemy cavalry. if against infantry, the pikemen leave their pikes behind the battalions, using only the shield and the sword. For the pike is not good for fighting the foot soldiers, embracing too much, and then it is of little use, as has been experienced, against the shields and roundels, especially since when entered from below they are rendered useless and of no effect.
