114                    History of the Kingdom

or reason, appreciate modesty, virtue and glory.
       Nature, when she forms us, does not put in the beginning the most vivid colors, it is necessary that nourishment & precepts must place them there, even when they would be the best born & most diciplinable minds.
       The arts & sciences are learned only through reading & practice, although to profit from them, one must be taught by good masters. What thee wise Architects who founded this state, recognizing, wanted among their most beautiful ordinances, that the young nobility, & the richest of the people, who were known to be well-born, should be liberally nourished in all civil & military discipline: having built for this purpose an Academy, where place of exercise, five hundred paces from the royal city, in an airy, eminent & well furnished. And just as the youth is divided into three ages, so also three large courtyards were made for lodgings, separated from each other by some fifty paces, & a fourth of equal size, both for the Classics, as for the Professors, which have four hundred & fifty feet for each face, inside to inside, which are in all eighteen hundred feet: along of which are built six lodgings of four stories
