168                    History of the Kingdom

Also all the inscriptions honoring false Gods were erased, and in their place were placed the most important passages taken from Scripture, to the honor of the sovereign God, against the error they held, then benches were made all around in the style of an amphitheater, and others in the middle intersected by aisles to seat the women, there are others for the Clergy, and also a high chair for the Bishop, in the manner that we will describe below.
       All the temples were purged and adorned with everything necessary for divine service. This great personage Byrachil prays the Senate that it would declare to him what was the civil police of their state, with the circumstances and dependencies, so that according to it he would consider establishing also the Ecclesiasticus, which being graciously granted to him, and having well understood and heard the whole, he told them how he truly recognized that God had at all times had a particular care of their Republic, seeing it so happily polished, that they only lacked the last traits of perfection, which
