176                    History of the Kingdom

are made of marble of various colours, which represent, as if they were paintings, various compartments, stories, figures and animals, so that there is almost no one who would not scruple to set foot on things so beautiful and artistically made.
       The top is covered with tiles, or large plates of gilded copper with various figures and statues of the same fabric on the amortization and all around the Cornice. There are Niches inside and outside between the pylastres, in which were the figures of the Gods and goddesses that they adored made with admirable artifice, some were of marble and porphyry; others of bronze and silver but they were removed, as has been said. Now on the inside instead of these are placed twelve steps of carpentry supported by strong woodwork of a height of a foot and a half accompanied each by a porpiter two and a half feet from this step in order to be able to kneel to pray.
       At the end of the oval opposite the main door, above the twelfth step is the Bishop's chamber & all around, drawing down, the seats of the Ecclesiastics distinguished by a small barrier & alley, in front of them are the porpiters to put the books to sing
