186                    History of the Kingdom

      This done, the Bishop takes the unleavened bread, cut into pieces and pieces in large gilded silver dishes covered with napkins, which breaking it and giving it to the whole table, says these words:
      Take, eat, this bread is the figure of the true heavenly bread, which our Lord Jesus Christ wanted to honor with the title and name of his body, so that in doing so we remember that he died for us, and that in this faith, he will give us forever the perfect and entire nourishment up there in the heavens where he dwells.
      Then the Archpriests with him taking the chalices which are of gold, or of gilded silver, according to the greatness and riches of the Churches, the Bishop said to them,
      This wine is the figure of the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was shed for the washing of our sins, so that in memory of it, your souls may be watered and vivified eternally.
      No alms are given at the table, because in doing so it seems that one buys this precious gift from God, and besides that alms is as if forced and full of ostentation.
