190                    History of the Kingdom

      This done, the dead man is placed in the tomb, then one withdraws in good order without singing, to the house of the deceased, consoling his parents and friends. From there each one goes home.
      It is permitted to all those who wish to build a burial place in a public or private place, such as in their country houses, mountains, deserts, or other places. Estimating among themselves the magnificence of burials to be a pious and honorable fate.

As there are no poor in this country according to what was ordered in the ancient Law.

                               CHAP. XII.

      I am greatly astonished to see the beggarly and mendicancy that one sees throughout Europe, and the bad policing that one observes; An infinity of ignorant people estimating that it would be impossible to make it so that there were no poor, given the inequality of goods, the bad management of many, and the avarice and tyranny of the great. But how much they are mistaken, I will now make it clear.
