38                   History of the Kingdom

taking occasion on some passage of Scripture, reminds him of his duty towards God & his people, exhorts him to virtue, depresses his vices, praising him if he has done some generous & honest action, reprimanding him similarly if he recognizes that he has failed in something.
       These Holy admonitions being finished, the music enters, which sings the pause of a Psalm[1], & after a brief prayer is made, he then rises: If it is a day of council, the bell of the palace having sounded, he goes there until nine o'clock, according to the importance & length of the business: The assembly being adjourned, he goes to the Academy, in which the youth is nourished & instructed, & there exercises until eleven o'clock in whatever pleases him most. Then having changed his shirt, he returns to dine with those who had previously been invited, who are usually either Senators, or deputies of the States, or some Princes & lords, both foreigners & of the Court. There, some questions are discussed, subtle & facetious, or they talk about the exercises, or they take pleasure in the various chords of voices & musical instruments.
       The dinner, having been completed, praise is given to God in music, as was done upon entrance,
