CHAP. XII.

       WHEN the army leaves its lodgings according to the country and the enemy is near, or far, weak, or strong the General arranges it according to prudence, and that he recognizes to be necessary, it not being possible to give rules in cases so diverse as are the events of war: but for the ordinary and in general, when the enemy is near,
