102                    History of the Kingdom

to the soldiers, there, there being nothing in the world which has so much force and power to assure and excite courage as such exhortations.
       No merchant would dare bring anything to the camp that would serve to soften and weaken courage, but only what is useful and necessary.
       All whores, tricksters and clowns are banished.
       No soldier takes anything without paying from friends and allies, nor from the enemy if it is not permitted to him:
       No one steals or deceives his companion, without being rigorously punished and returning fourfold.
       There are no cards, no thieves, nor other such kinds of things, especially since they make the soldier idle, quarrelsome, blasphemous and quick to undertake all sorts of wickedness for money.
       No weapons or war equipment can be sold or pledged. For if the soldier comes into need by fortuitous event or illness, he is helped by his companions, or the Treasurer advances him money on his pay. Thus there are very few left wanting.
       If booty is gained in a battle or assault, it is shared between the Captains and soldiers
