116                    History of the Kingdom

for prayers, & divine service every morning, which is in an oval shaped like an amphitheater, capable of holding three thousand people, with the accommodation for those who administer the word of God, & also a large & beautiful Library.
       These three courtyards & intervals being thus arranged, there is another fourth of the same size, or longer, where are all the halls, both for the Classics, as for the Mathematicians, Philosophers, Physicians, Legists, & Theologians, which are all in steps up to the top, & in the middle with seats & desks, in order to make the places more accomodating & capable of holding many listeners.
       Besides the three Libraries that we have mentioned, which are near the temples, there is one in this place much more famous, full of a hundred thousand volumes of books, the most beautiful & rare that are in the whole world.
       All around these four large courtyards, a space of three hundred feet is left completely level without there being anything, then joining this space, another is left, also extending all around four hundred & fifty feet wide, planted in quincun[1] of green oaks ninety feet apart from each other,
