120                    History of the Kingdom

for the nobility, that of all the other officers & servants.
       We will first speak of the stable which is precisely opposite the last walls of the dwellings of the third age, all along the great wall, having a length of four hundred paces, and two hundred width: all around are arranged a thousand two-row horses in two ranks, on each ten of which is placed a Master Groom & an assistant, & on each hundred horses a Squier & four Creas:[1] Moreover, there is a large Purveyor, who supplies hay, straw & oats to each horse, for the price & sum of twelve sols per day.
       At the four corners of this stable are four pavilions, each containing twenty beautiful rooms each, to accommodate the Squires, Creas[1] and other officers, and in addition this, a large portal to enter into the arena, the door of which is fifteen feet wide, and thirty feet high, on the front of which is a large bronze horse with inscriptions in praise of the Cavaliers, and of the generosity and utility of the horse.
       In this large portal is housed the grand Esquire with his train.
       Above the stables are the granaries
