======================== In what manner the council proceeded to the creation of this great Academy. CHAP. II. HAVING been ordered that the young nobility would be fed together in the manner that we shall describe below. An Edict was made that the noble Fathers of all the Provinces, on the conditions that the poor would be fed, maintained & disciplined at the expense of the rich, without it costing the fathers & mothers anything. That for the rich, they pay their pensions according to the value of their goods, & amenities of their houses, as it would be taxed by the President, after having learned from the civil Milleniers & Centeniers the value of their goods & amenities. In this way the rich come to pay the pension of the poor as if imperceptibly. So much so that the public feels very little burden & inconvenience. This Edict was no sooner published than everyone brought their children with extreme joy, |
