With what order the youth is placed under the Masters of the Chamber or Pedagogues. CHAP. III. FIRSTLY all this youth was divided into three ages, the first from six to twelve, from twelve to eighteen, from eighteen to twenty-four, which is the time at which they leave the Academy to go to their duties, or to accompany the Magistrates. After each of the ages is divided by twenties, & given in charge to a Preceptor who has all power over them, with a couple of valets, who are tailors, in order to mend them, dress them, & clean their clothes. If they are of the first age, they are housed on one of the floors of the lodgings of the first Courtyard, which, as we have said, each have two beautiful rooms, one for sleeping, where all their beds are spread out in pairs: the other for eating, rehearsing, writing, designing & singing music. |
