[English Translation] youth because of the necessity of them, so as not to have good books turned to the vulgar languages, it has not been necessary to do so in this Kingdom, especially since all the sciences are in the vulgar tongue, & it is even held that the Indians, ancient Brachmans, Egyptians, Arabs, Chaldeans & Greeks, have drawn their knowledge from the lively sources of science of this people. Which has been a very great advancement & relief of the study of this youth, in regard to those who spend the best of their age, acquiring the knowledge of languages, which then afterwards are of very little use to them. The first thing therefore that one learns from six to twelve years is to read well & write well all sorts of letters, then Grammar, Poetry & History, with music, & some small principles of Geometry & Cosmography. In the second age, they read Rhetoric, Mathematics, Dialectic, Physics & Metaphysics, with the most beautiful & elegant Orators, & the most beautiful parts of Medicine.
