170                    History of the Kingdom

but the magistrate who would chastise them would chastise them much more rigorously than the Laity, especially since they were better instructed, & had more knowledge of virtue & piety, if they happened to fail, they are all the more reprehensible & worthy of punishment.

                             CHAP. III.

       The six score Bishops were chosen from among the most learned & best instructed that could be found among those who went to accompany this holy man to the Provinces, where, in addition to the ordinary preaching & admonitions, he lectured them every day on the principal points of the faith, which the Holy Spirit engraved in such a way in their souls that there were already some very learned ones, aians were previously educated in all kinds of sciences & liberal disciplines.
       Of the others who were not so learned, the most learned knew how to place Archpriests or Suffragans over ten parishes: The other simple
