18 History of the Kingdom Lords & republics, which, both because of the poor order they maintained in their government, as for the plurality of rulers, were continually in perpetual wars & disputes, having rendered the land almost deserted by regular battles & massacres which were made between them, because of the ambition & jealousy that each had for his own power. Finally, the wisest, weary of this continual disorder, seeing their ruin quite evident, assembled with the Kings, Princes, & Ambassadors of the republics in a neutral place, and of safe access, swearing among themselves by all the Gods they worshipped wanting to hold & inviolably observe what would be resolved & determined in this holy assembly. Having done so, each proposed the manner of government that he judged the most suitable, useful & appropriate for the preservation both for the Nobility, the inhabitants of the towns & the common people. Finally, all weighing, debating & carefully considered all matters, they ordered the state of this flourishing Monarchy in the manner we shall describe hereafter, which was such that one must believe that God, the enemy of all disorder & confusion, presided over this venerable assembly being impossible that |
