before God, of the impunity for such crimes. In what manner Justice is exercised, & under what circumstances. CHAP. XIII. If any controversy or lawsuit arises between persons, whether from the towns, villages, or Nobles, the Dixeniers will first try to give order to it, & to bring them to justice; if they cannot, & the case is beyond their reach, they would give notice of it to the Civil Centeniers, who will call to all their Dizeniers, & do the same as the Dizeniers. That if they cannot, & the case is of too great importance & the parties of difficult accord, they would be allowed to go before the Judges of the capital city of the Province.   If it is between Nobles & Commoners, especially since the Nobles are usually proud & high-handed, & who would not want to be judged by commoner of low quality: the Noble will take three of his friends, & the Peasant his Centenier & two Dizeniers, who who would place before                   D |
