50                    History of the Kingdom

them the disagreement, if there is a middle ground, otherwise they would appeal to the Judges. The plaintiff having his party summoned for eight or fifteen days according to his pleasure, either he must appear, or persons for him, without any delay, or else he will forfeit his defense. Having arrived, he presents himself before the Judges, who provide them an Advocates, to whom they each communicate separately their arguments, & provide him their documents & packets in hand, so that he can see them & report to the hearing at eight [days], fifteen [days] or within a month at the latest, according to the term & delay that would have been given to parties. This time expired, they must present themselves at the hearing, to hear the report of the Advocate: to make, if they wish, the objections that he could have made, or to allege new reasons, & defenses should they have any.
       This having been done, the parties step down, then the Councilors one by one opine out loud, so much so that each recognizes of what footing they march towards justice, as well as to instruct the young Advocates & Gentlemen who accompany them to the Provinces.
       The opinions gathered, the parties are brought back to hear their sentence pronounced, so that if there is something misunderstood or
