place, even outside the Kingdom, if he can such flee without being apprehended: But this happens very rarely that anyone escapes, both because they are vigorously pursued, as also for the penalty for those who would harbor, similar to that which such delinquents should suffer when apprehended. If he is caught, he is taken from parish to parish, to the place where he committed the crime, at which place his trial is held & completed, by the Royal Judge delegated to ten parishes, who is of no little authority, as we will say in its place, & from there is sent bound hand & foot to the Provincial city, with the case & the witnesses, where having arrived before the Judges, he is assigned an advocate to prosecute him, to whom the trial is put in hand, & another to defend him, to whom also the accuser communicates the evidence, then on the day appointed, he is conducted in to a full hearing, where after having heard the accusations & defenses on both sides, he is judged. If it happens that he is condemned to be flogged, the executioners who are there present, seize him, & tie him to a post or column, which is in front of the Tribunal, & there give him as many lashes as are ordered, & no more, with tendons, & long pieces of |
