on their backs, without luggage, goujats[1], or horses, for no one speaks in this country of such delicacies, which only serve to effeminate the courage of the soldiers, & to starve the armies.
       They are forbidden to ransack on pain of life, but when they arrive for the evening, they must go to the civil Centeniers, who courteously give them lodgings. Moreover, they must buy everything that is necessary for living, & introduce their hosts in the morning before the said Centeniers, to know if they are content, & if they want for anything, otherwise they are rigorously chastised in this same place without any formality or delay.
