only furnished with some certain leather which falls to four fingers from the knee, with a buckler three feet wide in diameter: The light arquebuze of such length as the muskets, and almost of equal bore, the short sword, and dagger of a foot. For the Captains, they are armed in the same manner as the pikemen, except that they carry in front of them in combat, iron shields, to protect from muskets, in order to ward off the blows of the first salvo, & by this means to preserve in its the entirety of their persons, and the head of the battalion. If it is against cavalry, they carry none, but only pistol-proof weapons with pike in hand.   The soldiers, in addition to the weapons that we have said, are each obliged to carry a pick or pickaxe, a wooden spade and a hatchet, or sickle, to work on the fortification of the camp, and on the sieges of the towns, and in addition to that, their garments & small equipment. |
