Of the order of the Gendarmerie & light horses. CHAP. IV. AS it is one of the greatest expenses of a Republic, to maintain a large cavalry, but nevertheless necessary, it was decided that to avoid the expense and the large wages, that they need for the maintenance of their equipage, that the Nobles who had up to five hundred livres of revenue would maintain a good service horse, to be ready at all times at the command of their Captains: Those who had a thousand livres of income, two; and if they had three, four, five, six, or more, he would maintain as many as they have for each thousand livres of income, which poor Gentlemen trained from childhood who would have less than five hundred livres income, would go and take from the aforesaid Lords, when it is necessary to muster, or to go to war, according to whether they would be ordered by the Captains sent from his Majesty, being obligated as long as they were not killed, or |
