96                    History of the Kingdom

which is sometimes wide and hollow, 12 feet and sometimes twenty with a rampart and parapet inside, twelve feet high and as wide: the Parapet is twelve and a half, well bound with fascines[1] and turf.
       This enclosure is flanked by spurres[2] of one hundred feet intervals, which extend out of the courtine about thirty paces, also furnished with their trenches, parapets & ramparts:
       The gates are 18 feet wide, covered with a trench in front, made as a spurre, leaving only between them and the ditches of the camp a passage on each side twenty feet wide, so that if the enemy wanted to enter in force, or he had the means to charge from the flanks at the entrance to the gate, and also to prevent anyone from rushing into the camp so suddenly and unexpectedly.
