16                   History of the Kingdom

Creator has prepared their sustenance, or that he wishes to give this contentment to the inhabitants of this Kingdom above other peoples, to see them sing, & fly in the air. For all kinds of birds of prey that we have, such as Eagles, Falcons, Goshawks, Sakers, Gyrfalcons, Tagaraux, Sparrowhawks, Merlins & Auberaux [1] find their habitats & reside there continually.
Water birds, such as Ducks, Teals, Cormorants, Loons & Penguins cover the rivers, as do Herons, Hen Sparrow & Egrets the shores: Swans go there in flocks of more than two or three hundred, being forbidden on penalty of a severe punishment to kill them.
Partridges, Quails, Thrushes, Pheasants, Crows, & such other kinds of birds are there in good numbers.
The Parrots & Ravens of India are so variably painted in diverse colors that the mind remains delighted in contemplating such rare masterpieces.
The Birds of Paradise, which we call Mamucos, whose origin no one knows for sure, are seen hanging from the Cinnamon & Clove trees, the females brooding their young on the backs of trunks,[1] living on manna, dew,
