182                    History of the Kingdom

       =============================

       Some principal points of their Religion.

                             CHAP. VIII.

      First of all, they believe in only two Sacraments, namely, Baptism & the Holy Communion, one which washes us from original sin, giving us entry into the Kingdom of God, the other which nourishes us & unites us with Jesus Christ by the means of his Holy Spirit in all sanctification.
       They believe that without works no one can be saved,1 and that they must necessarily be done by those who wish to attain eternal life, especially since although it is the mercy of God which is the efficient cause of salvation set free by the washing of Baptism, it nevertheless requires good works, as being a necessary sign & mark of the true faith (which as Saint James says, works by good works)2 promising to redeem even a glass of water.
       It is therefore necessary that whoever wishes to be in his grace and have eternal life, pray that he may supply his defects by his infinite
