For these reasons they ordered that in the towns and villages where there were men fit to bear arms from the age of 18 to 55 years, that they would be placed by ten & on each ten a chief & above the Dizeniers, the Centeniers with their Lieutenants, ensigns & two sergeants, & over ten Centeniers a Millenier who would be sent from the Court, who would be his residence right in the ten Parishes & would have correspondence with a Dixmillenier, who would similarly be sent from the Court, and would make his residence in one of the towns in the middle of all his Milleniers, so that his inferiors could better receive his commands. The Milleniers have two hundred escu in wage from the public, being usually some strong young men newly from the Academy, well-conditioned & valiant, who have passed through all the degrees both of good nourishment, as well as exercise. As for the Dixmillenier, he is a personage of greater experience & authority, who has already passed through many principal offices, & has six hundred escus in salary from the King, |
