who will make the patrol, and the Dizeniers of each company that is on guard, in order to receive it from the patrols that pass.
If it happens that the sentinels have been well placed and that they are not found asleep, nor out of their places, the thing is well: But that not being the case, those of the patrol who have found the fault, will accuse the Captain and will say the time and the place, at which they will have found the fault, the next day the Captain is called before the Colonels or Captains of a thousand men who hold their hearing before the lodgings of the general.
The thing verified by the two witnesses of the patrol (for no other proof is needed) the sentinel who was represented by the Captain, was immediately put the sword. This is why there is almost never a fault with the sentinels, because of the severe punishment that they receive.
If those who on patrol also fail in their duty and in reporting the failings of the sentinels and guard corps, they are punished according to the offense, and if the soldiers abandon their guard corps without leave, they are whipped for the sake of infamy and given a month to eat barley instead of wheat.
